COMMON SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES: More information below:
• Urinating more often than usual, particularly at night
• Feeling very thirsty
• Feeling very tired
• Unexplained weight loss
• Itching around the penis or vagina, or frequent episodes of thrush
• Cuts or wounds that heal slowly
• Blurred vision – caused by the lens of the eye becoming dry
WHY DO WE GET THESE SYMPTOMS IN DIABETES:
These symptoms occur because some or all of the glucose stays in the blood, and isn’t being used as fuel for energy. The body tries to reduce blood glucose levels by flushing the excess glucose out of the body in the urine. High levels of glucose being passed in the urine are a perfect breeding ground for the fungal infection which causes thrush.
RISK FACTORS FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES:
Three of the main risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes are:
Age – Being over the age of 40 (over 25 for people of south Asian, Chinese, African-Caribbean or black African origin).
Genetics – Having a close relative with the condition, such as a parent, brother or sister.
Weight – Being overweight or obese.
PREVENTING TYPE 2 DIABETES:
If you’re at risk of type 2 diabetes, you may be able to prevent it developing by making lifestyle changes:
• Eating a healthy, balanced diet
• Losing weight if you’re overweight, and maintaining a healthy weight
• Stopping smoking if you smoke
• Drinking alcohol in moderation
• Taking plenty of regular exercise
How does diabetes work
So when we eat foods that contain carbohydrates our body breaks it down into glucose so it can use it for energy. The glucose gets absorbed into our bloodstream, which increases our blood sugar levels. But Your body also knows that high blood sugars are dangerous, so it produces and releases insulin from the pancreas, to get into our bloodstream where the sugars are located, so it can take out the excess sugars and store it in the liver, muscle, and fat cells for energy purposes. It does this to make sure the sugar levels in the blood never get too high and for the sugars to go where they need to be. Thats the normal process that occurs in the body. But the problem in type 2 diabets is that your cells become desensitized to insulin, which makes it very difficult for the insulin to do its job to remove the sugars in the bloodstream, which causes increases in blood sugar levels.
What are some diabetes signs and diabetes symptoms
1.) Making more bathroom trips than normal. Because your sugars are so high, not all those sugars are being reabsorbed into your body to get to where it needs to be. So its spills over into your urine, and water will follow those sugars into your urine. So you’ll have to pee more.
2.) Increased thirst. Because you are peeing more, you’ll naturally feel more thirsty.
3.) Blurred vision, which is a loss of sharpness in one or both eyes. This happens when our sugar levels get too high, it causes our lenses in our eyes to swell making it hard to see which can lead to diabetic retinopathy if it is not checked and can lead to blindness. That’s why if you are diabetic, its crucial that you see an eye doctor at least once or twice a year and have a diabetes specialist to work with.
4.)Diabetic neuropathy which is a nervous system disease that causes tingling and numbness feelings sometimes with pain too in your extremities.
5.) A reduced ability to heal wounds, which all comes back to increased blood sugar levels which leads to lower blood circulation, lowering oxygen and nutrients to get to the wound sites.
6.) Recurring fungal thrush infections in the genital or mouth regions as well as in certain areas of the skin, for women this can mean more UTI’s or more yeast infections.
Other symptoms can be: feeling tired all the time, dry mouth, and feeling irritable. Then there are those that are at risk, which include people that are over 45, overweight, physically inactive, smokers, people who have diabetes in their family, or people who have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Diabetes can cause very serious health problems down the road, so take these signs seriously and follow up with your doctor if you notice any of these signs. Hopefully your signs are not diabetes, but it is important to have that check up because early diagnosis and treatment can prevent many, many future complications.
