Nearly 1 in 5 American tweens and teens has either diabetes or prediabetes, and many are unaware of it. In a nationwide study, researchers measured the blood glucose levels of 2,606 randomly chosen adolescents ages 12 to 19. Overall, 18 percent had prediabetes and 0.8 percent had diabetes. Nearly a third of those with diabetes had not been diagnosed. Undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes were more common in African American and Latino participants. If you have type 2, you may want to encourage your children or grandchildren to get tested for diabetes.
